POSTER AND POSTCARD TEMPLATES

Poster & Postcard Building Instructions
The HIDA templates are vector based. It is best to design your poster in a vector based program, such as Indesign or Illustrator.
Photoshop is a rastor based program (pixels) and images will lose quality from screen to print if not sized correctly.
Posters that are not formatted properly will be returned to the exhibitor to be corrected.
Submitting Posters
Email final poster designs to grantvetter@gmail.com
Poster designs should be submitted as an 11” x 17” .pdf, and Postcard Designs should be submitted as two 4” x 6” .pdfs.
Download templates at: https://web.archive.org/web/20160417181011/http://herbergerinstitute.asu.edu/faculty/resources/communications/design_templates.php
I recommend using the .pdf template as it is readable in all platforms and on the Internet.
Building your design using:
1. Photoshop
Demo: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bzea3GM9yWQaY21yMzdScEMxRWM/view?usp=sharing
Open a new document
>File >New >”Tabloid” 11” x 17” for posters and >custom 4” x 6” for postcards
Place the template
>File >Place...> select the downloaded template
Photoshop is a rastor-based program. The template is a vector-based image as a .pdf, but when it is placed in a photoshop document it becomes rastorized (pixilated). Once the template is placed, the size of the template cannot be increased without the text being adversely affected. DO NOT ALTER THE SIZE OF THE TEMPLATE ONCE IT HAS BEEN PLACED.
Design your image
Your image should be original art/design.
Save your design
Save an editable .psd file (maintaining layers) in a safe place in case you need to go back and make changes.
Flatten your design
>Layer >Flatten Image
This will make the image unalterable but it will make the file smaller
Save as PDF
Depending on your version of Photoshop there are a couple of ways to do this
>File >Save as >Dropdown Photoshop PDF
**or**
>File >Print >Print PDF
2. Illustrator (recommended)

Open a new document
>File >New >”Tabloid” 11” x 17” for posters and >custom 4” x 6” for postcards
Place the template
>File >Place...> select the downloaded template
Illustrator is a vector-based program. The template is a vector based image and can be altered in Illustrator (although it should not be necessary).

Illustrator 4 has pdf altering capabilities. If you have this version you can reopen the pdf and change the design.
