Job Title: ASU GALLERIES Attendent

Close Date: Position is posted by the HR representative and promoted by the Galleries Director in his classes on the 1st day of class for two consecuative weeks with a close date of Monday on the 3rd week of school.

STUDENT WORKER POSITION

YOU MUST HAVE RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION AND BE WILLING TO WORK AT GRANT STREET STUDIOS IN PHOENIX TO APPLY! 

Job Description: Gallery and maintenance duties, some light filing or cataloging, attentiveness to the public and the ability to greet visitors and sit a regular working shift of 2 1/2 to 5 hours. Opening and closing procedures include: (1) Unlocking the front doors of the warehouse using the key, (2) Placing the exhibition sign outside, (3) Opening the side door to the gallery, (2) turning on track lights (never fluorescents), powering on any electronic art, and (4) Unlocking the sliding door of the Gallery, (5) perform these duties in reverse order when closing.

When you shift begins remember to sign-in in the sign in book, note visitors, note anything notable about the shift, and email the Gallery Director or Gallery R.A. if we’re running low on Tally Sheets.

Essential Duties: 

THIS JOB IS ONLY FOR THE PHOENIX LOCATION AND NOT THE TEMPE CAMPUS. 

YOU MUST BE ABLE TO GET TO THE GRANT STREET STUDIOS IN PHOENIX AND GET TO WORK ON TIME!!!

WE USUALLY NEED FULL OR SPLIT SHIFT WORKERS FOR THURS, FRI AND SATURDAY FROM NOON TO 5PM.

WE ALSO NEED WORKERS EVERY 1st and 3rd FRIDAY OF THE MONTH FROM 6-10pm.

Working shifts are noon-5pm on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday with two additional shifts available each month from 6-9pm on Fridays. These are the ONLY times that we needs workers. It is important to be on time and to be 5-10 minutes early for oepning shifts! 

Desired Qualifications: A love of learning about art, good decision making, an ability to follow directions, and manage an exhibition-like environment or public space without supervision.

Working Environment: The gallery must always be kep looing professional, clean and well lit. Cleaning supplies located in the bathrooms or utility closets will allow you to: clean windows, sweep or mop, remove debris, etc. You will want to remove trash from the gallery trash cans at the end of the week. This may need to be done more often if there is food or other perishables in the cans. Dumpsters are located behind the building.

Sometimes the position does not fund as work study and has to be turned into a independent contract positon. 

 

A WORK STUDY ONLY position exist for Gallery Attendent workers at STEP GALLERY in Phoenix at Grant Street Studios. (605. E. Grant Street, Phoenix, AZ. 85004).

Should be able to lift 50lbs, engage in regular light physical activity, sit, perform basic running operations activities, use technical equipment like a television, projector or computer, and be able to sit for an extended period of time.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Opening and Closing Procedure

  • Open through the side door using the code.
  • Get the keys out of the lock box by the crit space using the code.
  • Unlock front doors of the warehouse using the key. Slide the door open.
  • Place the exhibition sign outside.
  • Use the key to go in the side door to the gallery.
  • Turn on track lights (never fluorescents).
  • Power on any electronic art.
  • Unlock the sliding door of the Gallery by pulling up the pin.
  • When you shift begins remember to sign-in in the sign in book, note visitors, note notables, and email the Gallery Director or Gallery R.A. if we’re running low on Tally Sheets.
  • Perfrom these same operations at the end of the day in reverse order.

 

Your Primary Function is to Greet and Assist Gallery Visitors                                                   

If you are knowledgeable about the current exhibition you may share information including: Artists’ background, information on specific works, how to contact the artist, etc. Visitors may also want to know how to get more information from our website, be added to a mailing list, or directed to the other galleries. If visitors would like to be added to the mailing list, please inform them that the mailing list can found be on the left hand sidebar of the “Art Events” page on the Herberger website, or they can add their name to the guest book on the desk.

 

Protect Artwork

Most artwork is not designed to be handled by the public. Unless otherwise specified, assume that the artist does not want their work touched. Enforce this by gently asking visitors not to touch the works.

Archival Work

You may be asked to sort, file or compile information, back logs, alphabetize or do some light secretarially work while you sit the gallery when it's slow.

           

Transportation

You must be able to get to work on time and travel to the Great Street Studios in Phoenix.
